Braised Goose Hotpot in Chegongmiao — A Must‑Try Winter Comfort Food in Shenzhen

Cheryl Kong | 2026-08-23

Hotpot is so popular in China that there seems to be no limit to the ingredients and flavors people are willing to turn into a hotpot. It was my first time hearing that braised stock could be used as a hotpot base, so I came to try it immediately.

Goose is already considered a nourishing ingredient in Chinese cuisine, but having it in a hotpot made with rich braising sauce was a completely new experience for me.

📍 Practical Information

Name of the Shop: Cheng E Chaoshan Cuisine (澄鹅潮汕菜)

Location: 深圳市福田区东海缤纷天地负一楼B1056号;B1056, Basement Level 1, Donghai MixC World, Futian District, Shenzhen

Nearest Metro Station: 1号线车公庙站B口;Chegongmiao Station, Line 1 — Exit B

Price: ¥80 per person

Opening Hours: 11:00–21:30

A Unique Braised Goose Hotpot Experience

The braised hotpot was surprisingly flavorful, and the broth came to a boil very quickly, so there was no long waiting time. The rich, aromatic braising sauce created a deep, savory base that paired perfectly with every ingredient.

Goose Intestine — Crisp and Sweet

The goose intestine is a must‑order. It only needs eight seconds in the pot, and the result is crisp, chewy, and naturally sweet. A perfect texture.

Goose Meat — Tender and Fun to Eat

The goose meat was fatty, tender, and full of flavor. The fatty parts became incredibly soft and almost melt-in-your-mouth once cooked.

Old Tofu — A Pleasant Surprise

The old tofu was one of the biggest surprises. I initially didn’t expect much, but it turned out to be excellent — firm on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of layered texture.

Ham Slices — Unexpectedly Delicious

The ham slices also exceeded expectations. After a quick dip in the hotpot, they tasted almost like roasted ham — salty, fragrant, and incredibly satisfying.

Rice Noodles — Smooth and Flavorful

The rice noodles were silky and lightly seasoned. They were delicious, but they shouldn’t be cooked for too long, or they may absorb too much salt.

Other Ingredients

The prawns only need three to four minutes and come out fresh and sweet.

The vegetable platter even included cherry tomatoes to help cut through the richness. I really enjoy the flavor of mushrooms. When you add spicy sauces to them, the taste changes completely — it brings out their natural freshness and sweetness in a whole new way.

The set meal also includes drinks: Salted plum lemon tea. It was sweet‑savory and refreshing, perfect for balancing the heavier flavors.

📚Overall Experience

Overall, the experience was excellent. I never expected braised sauce to work so well as a hotpot base, especially when paired with the three classic Chaoshan dipping sauces. It was simply outstanding.

The restaurant is spacious, clean, and comfortable, with plenty of seating that makes it ideal for gatherings. The service was also impressive, with staff members being attentive, friendly, and quick to assist.

⚠️There was, however, a small incident worth mentioning. When one of the female servers brought the hotpot to our table, the pot was filled quite close to the top, and some of the broth spilled onto my husband’s trousers while she was carrying it over. We understood that it was completely accidental and did not blame the server at all. Fortunately, the broth wasn’t very hot, so no one was hurt.

This is a place I would still recommend, and I’d definitely consider coming back. The food was excellent overall, but I hope the restaurant can improve this small aspect of its service to make the dining experience safer for both customers and staff.
